How Do I Prepare for a Job Interview?

Let’s be honest: very few people actually enjoy job interviews. Sitting in a hot seat while a panel scrutinises your career history can feel a bit like an interrogation. However, the difference between a nerve-wracking experience and a successful one usually comes down to one thing: preparation.

If you’ve landed an interview, the employer already thinks you can do the job on paper. Now, you just need to prove it in person. Here is how to get yourself match-fit.
Master the Job Description
Before you even think about picking out an outfit, sit down with the job description (JD). You need to know this document inside out.
Don't just skim it; deconstruct it. Highlight the key skills and attributes they are looking for.
If the JD mentions "stakeholder management" or "budget oversight," you can bet your bottom dollar they’ll ask you about it. You should aim to understand 100% of what the role entails.
Pro Tip: If there are parts of the role that seem a bit vague or you aren't quite sure how a specific responsibility fits into the daily grind, write them down. These make for excellent, intelligent questions to ask at the end of the interview.
Evidence is Everything
It’s one thing to say you’re a "problem solver," but it’s another thing entirely to prove it. For every key skill listed in the JD, think of a real-life example from your past experience.
What happened? (The Situation)
What did you actually do? (The Action)
What was the result? (The Outcome)
Employers love stories because they provide proof of competence. Think back to your proudest moments, the times you handled a difficult client, or when you streamlined a messy process.
Know Your "Why"
At some point, they will ask: "Why have you applied for this role?" "Because I need a job" might be the truth, but it won't get you hired. You need to articulate:
Why this company? (Show you’ve researched their values or recent projects).
Why this specific role? (How does it align with your career path?)
What do you bring to the table? (This is your "elevator pitch"—the unique blend of skills and personality that makes you the best fit).
Practice Makes Perfect
You might have the best stories in the world, but if they stay trapped in your head, they won't help you on the day. Say your answers out loud. Record yourself on your phone or talk to the mirror. It feels a bit silly at first, but it helps you trim the "ums" and "ahs" and ensures your points are punchy.
