Job interviews don’t all run for the same length of time, but most follow a fairly consistent pattern.

Generally speaking, allow for up to an hour for your job interview.

First interviews

Most first interviews run for around 30 to 45 minutes. These are usually used to understand your background, experience, and interest in the role. Employers are looking to see if there is a basic fit before moving to the next stage.

Later stage interviews

Second or final interviews are often longer. These can run anywhere from 45 minutes to 1.5 hours, depending on the role. Senior positions may also involve multiple interviews in the same day.

Panel interviews

When more than one person is involved, interviews can take longer. This is normal and simply reflects multiple perspectives in the hiring process.

It is always best to expect that interviews may run over time. This is often a positive sign and shows interest from the employer.
