What to expect during your first coaching session
Your sessions are based on you and what you need help with. Depending on your situation, we may work through your career direction, a particular job advertisement, your CV, a cover letter, LinkedIn, SEEK, networking or how to approach a specific employer.
Where appropriate, your coach will share their screen and work through the process with you so you can see exactly how it is done. You can ask questions as you go and work through real examples from your own career.
Sometimes you know you want a change. The difficult part is working out what that change should be and how to get there.
Our one on one career coaching is for people across Australia who want practical help with their career direction, job search and applications.
Whether you are changing careers, looking for a more senior role, moving into a different type of position or simply finding it difficult to get your job search moving, your coach will work with you one on one and show you what to do.
You will not just receive advice. You will learn how to approach your own career and job search. Your coach is not there to take over your job search. The aim is to show you how to make better decisions about the roles you apply for, how to present your experience, how to approach employers and how to find opportunities in different ways. So when you finish your coaching, you have more than a CV or cover letter. You have a better understanding of how to manage your own career and job search.
One on one career coaching can be useful if you are:
Changing careers
You want to move into a different career or industry and need help understanding how your existing experience can transfer.
Looking for promotion
You are ready for a more senior position and need to present your experience at the next level.
Moving into a different role
You want to move horizontally and use your existing skills in a different type of position.
Returning to work
You have been away from the workforce and want help preparing for your return.
Struggling with applications
You are applying for jobs but not getting the response you expected.
Unsure what to apply for
You know you want something different but are not sure which roles are right for you.
Ready for a change
You want to make a career move but need someone to work through your options with you.
What we can help you with
Career direction
Not sure what type of role you should be applying for? We will look at your current experience, skills and career goals and work through the options available to you.
This can include changing careers, moving vertically into a more senior position, moving horizontally into another type of role or moving into a different industry. The focus is on finding roles that make sense for your experience and what you want to do next.
Transferable skills and experience
Changing careers does not necessarily mean starting from the beginning.
You may already have skills and experience that are relevant to the role you want. Your coach will help you identify those skills and work out how to present them to an employer.
You will learn how to take experience from your previous roles and explain why it is relevant to a new position, even when your previous job title does not match the position you are applying for.
CV and cover letter writing guidance
A different job requires a different application. Your coach will show you how to tailor your CV and cover letter to the position you are applying for rather than sending the same documents to every employer.
We can work through an actual job advertisement with you using screen sharing.
You will see how to:
-
Identify what the employer is looking for
-
Match your experience to the requirements
-
Select the right examples from your background
-
Highlight your transferable skills
-
Edit your CV for the particular position
-
Tailor your cover letter
-
Address specific employer requirements
You will be shown the process rather than simply being given a finished document.
Using AI tools in your job search
AI tools can be useful when used properly.
Your coach will show you how to use them to support your job search, including researching roles, understanding job advertisements, generating ideas and reviewing your applications. You will also learn what information you should provide, what you need to check and what should always remain your own words and experience.
LinkedIn and professional networking
Your LinkedIn profile should tell people what you do, what you have experience in and what type of work you are interested in.
Your coach can help you set up or improve your profile and show you how to use LinkedIn as part of your job search.
You will also learn how to find relevant people, connect with professionals in your industry and start conversations that can lead to useful contacts and opportunities.
SEEK and other job search sites
We will also look at how you are using SEEK and other job sites such as Indeed. Your coach can help you set up your SEEK profile, improve how you search for positions and understand how to approach online applications. But your job search does not have to stop at the major job portals.
Finding jobs that are not advertised by cold calling
Some opportunities are found by approaching an employer directly. Your coach will show you how to research companies you would like to work for and look for opportunities outside the usual job boards.
This can include contacting employers directly, using LinkedIn, networking, contacting recruitment agencies, looking at company websites and approaching businesses even when they do not have a position advertised. If you have ever thought about cold calling or walking into a business to ask about employment but had no idea what to say, we can help. Your coach will guide you through the process.
We will look at who to contact, how to introduce yourself, what to say, what questions to ask and how to follow up. You will be able to prepare what you want to say before you make the call or approach the employer.
