Why it's not good to send out a messy job application

A messy and untidy resume and cover letter, when sent to an employer, is not a very good sign at all. The employer may question whether or not you are a very organised person or not. They may feel a sense of carelessness and that not much thought or care went into your application.

Before sending out your resume and cover letter, it makes sense then to double check, if not triple check your application documents to make sure that they are well presented, structured nicely and demonstrate that you have taken adequate time to prepare the job application. It will also help show to the prospective employer the kind of potential employee you may be.
