Working from home has become the new normal for many of us. But how do you stay motivated?
While the flexibility and lack of commute are definite perks, staying motivated outside of a traditional office can be a real challenge.

Between household distractions, blurred work-life boundaries, and the temptation to check the fridge (again), it’s easy to lose momentum.
Here are some down-to-earth tips to help you stay motivated, focused, and on track while working from home.
1. Stick to a Routine
One of the best ways to stay productive is to start your day like you would if you were heading into the office. Set your alarm, get dressed (yes, out of your pyjamas), have your coffee, and start work at a consistent time each day. A regular routine trains your brain to shift into “work mode” and helps you stay grounded.
2. Set Up a Dedicated Workspace
It’s tempting to work from the couch or even bed, but it’s not great for your focus or posture. Try to set up a dedicated workspace—even if it’s just a corner of the dining table. Keep it tidy, comfortable, and separate from your relaxing zones, so your brain knows it’s time to switch gears.
3. Write a To-Do List
Start each day with a short list of what you need to get done. Keep it realistic—three to five key tasks is usually enough. Ticking off items gives you a sense of progress and keeps you moving forward. It’s simple, but it works.
4. Take Regular Breaks
It might sound counterintuitive, but taking proper breaks actually boosts productivity. Step away from your screen every couple of hours. Stretch, go for a short walk, grab a cuppa—whatever works. You’ll come back feeling refreshed and more focused.
5. Stay Connected
Working from home can feel isolating at times. Make an effort to check in with colleagues, even if it’s just a quick message or a video call. Having a chat, sharing a laugh, or talking through a problem can lift your spirits and remind you that you’re not doing this alone.
6. Minimise Distractions
Easier said than done, right? But a few small tweaks can help. Put your phone on silent during deep work. Use headphones if you live with others. Let people know your working hours if you’re sharing your space. Little changes make a big difference.
7. Be Kind to Yourself
Some days will be more productive than others—and that’s okay. Don’t be upset up if you’re not smashing goals every single day. Working from home is a big shift, and we’re all learning to adjust. Celebrate the wins, no matter how small.
Final Thoughts
Staying motivated at home takes a bit of trial and error. Find what works best for you, and don’t be afraid to switch things up if your energy starts to dip. Remember—consistency, balance, and a bit of self-compassion go a long way.
You’ve got this.
