When asked “How do you handle a challenge?” in an interview

Every employee will face challenges in their job. An employer may ask you this question in an interview to obtain an understanding of how you would approach a situation.

How a situation is handled, can vary as there are many different techniques for managing problems. Here is an effective way to respond to this question.

Remember a significant challenge that you managed successfully. Discuss a professional problem that happened and define how you successfully handled it. Try and make the situation you mention one that would be relevant to the role.

Don’t just say to the interviewer what you did but explain how you did it. They want to learn how you approach situations, and this includes actions you take and your thought process. Most important emphasize the outcome and what you learned from it.

Express what you took away from the challenge and how it’s helped you grow.
