Tips on how to get your first job straight out of school

Congratulations, you have completed high school or university, but now you need to try and find your first job. It's never too early to start the job search process. In fact, if you require a new and revamped CV to help market you, we specialise in writing tailored CVs and cover letters for candidates of all levels and backgrounds.

At first, you might feel like it's pointless sending out your CV and competing against so many candidates that have more experience than you because you are getting nowhere.

Here are some ideas on how to position yourself to get a job right out of school:

  1. Have reasonable expectations, don't stress out about how much time it takes to get to an interview. Don't consider yourself a failure if you need to go on more than ten interviews or if it takes months to get a job. It's not you; it's the nature of the game. Job applications and interviews take practice just like anything else, and it can take a while to get it right. Another idea is making the most of your connections which can help get you through the door.

  2. Prepare for your interviews like you would for an exam. Practice with your friend or even an interview coach. Have you ever wondered what happens during an interview setting? Research the company and the industry as this will show that you have a genuine interest in what they do and are knowledgeable about the industry.

One big mistake is letting money be the focus and asking the interviewer too early about what your salary, holiday and benefits would be. You don't have experience for any role, but that's okay, focus on what you can bring to the position; be positive and confident, so the employer that you have a passion and want the role by even just thanking them for the opportunity to be interviewed.
