Approaching my employer for a pay-rise - what can I do?

For many people, this isn’t always easy to do.


Approaching an employer to ask for higher pay or review of your salary invokes uneasy feelings and thoughts cropping up into our minds about what the employer is going to think of you for asking and will our job be in jeopardy for asking and so forth.


So, yes, it isn’t easy to do. It’s difficult and even more so for someone who is not very confident talking to their employer. These are all suggestions as everyone’s situation, and circumstance is entirely different.


You may decided to do your research first. There are so many factors to consider. The size of the business, how many staff, what other people are being paid in the same role in the same industry, your performance at work and what kind of existing relationship you have with your employer at the time.


And, most importantly timing is critical. For example, it would be unwise to approach your employer for a meaningful discussion about your pay in the middle of a workplace crisis or major project nearing its completion, and everyone is stressed to the max.


There is a time and place for everything.


One suggestion is to ask for a ‘pay review’ as opposed to asking directly for more pay. This way, it will encourage the employer to have a good hard look at what they are paying you and review it at their discretion, which they can then come back to you after their review – which may or may not result in a pay increase.


Another suggestion is to back up, or for a better word, ‘justify’ your reasons for asking your employer to review your pay. You can explain to them how long it has been since your pay was last reviewed, the accomplishments you’ve had in your job, what great work you’ve done and so forth.

Again, these are all suggestions as everyone’s situation, and circumstance is entirely different.
